"The Empty Chair," stylus on tablet, 16x20. During this whole COVID thing, I think a lot about my loved ones who are no longer with me. The line between where I am, dancing my sailor's hornpipe on terra firma, and where they are (god knows) seems a lot more fragile than it did pre-pandemic. What inspired this painting was the feeling that my long-gone loved ones were closer than ever, as if, going about my mundane tasks, I could catch a glimpse of one of them out of the corner of my eye. This painting was created digitally, so prints are available from 8x10 to 32x40.

This digital painting required 18,883 strokes and 14 hours. Waimea Canyon is on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The color of the canyon walls reminds me of the canyon colors of western Colorado, which is my home. The contrast is the climate: the lush foliage and humidity on the island of Kauai is lovely! And this viewpoint of Waimea Canyon is an iconic one.

Wildlife, Bighorn, Western Landscape Painting “Sure Footed” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

 

I live on the high desert floor at the foot of the Colorado National Monument. The Monument is 20,500 acres of towering monoliths within a vast plateau with 6 distinctive canyons. It is host to a lot of wildlife including a growing herd of desert bighorns. While exploring the Monument a few years ago, this beauty gracefully climbed to the top of a rocky overlook and gazed down on us as if he knew he was a thing of power, grace and beauty. Such a lovely and unforgettable scene!

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

There's a stock tank and windmill on our little western Colorado ranchero. I've seen some pretty amazing things happen at the stock tank. This hawk spent quite a bit of time around the tank on an early fall day last year. She was up on the windmill, walking the rim of the tank, and then catching a glimpse of her reflection and freaking out. It reminded me of the Greek myth about Narcissus, who gazed at his reflection in a pond with such ardor that the gods turned him into a flower, a narcissus, so he could live at the water's edge forever.

Still Life, Flower, Water "Surprise at the Stock Tank" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

Out back of our house is an old corral, windmill, and stock tank. Our land is no longer a working ranch, so our stock tank is for our enjoyment and the pleasure of passing deer, coyotes, bobcat, and birds, birds, birds. We’ve even constructed ways for small animals to climb up to take a drink, climb down, or climb out of the tank if they fall into it. It’s really a wonderful piece of our lives. Every once in a while we put some water plants into the tank to see what will happen. This painting depicts one of those times when the water lilies bloomed. Against the green water and with the reflection of the windmill, I thought it was a spectacular thing of beauty!

This digital painting required 4495 strokes and 17 hours. Recent history and politics knocked a lot of us for a loop. Our usually-neighborly populace ruptured into a quarrelsome mess. When my siblings and I behaved like that as children, my mother would have threatened to "pull the car over and knock our heads together." I can't do that (she never did either), so instead I painted a piece that represents Old Glory, shattered like glass; exploding from the unbearable pressure of hatred and hostility. 

 36"x24" This painting will reproduce beautifully on archival paper, as a canvas wrap, or on metal.

Hawk, Bird Painting, Wildlife Art "High and Dry" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

 

During the winter, we empty the stock tank and put the brake on the windmill. At that point, it becomes a lofty perch for the birds. The ravens love it, the starlings love it, and the hawks love it! From the windmill they can see the entirety of the surrounding high desert property and all the little creatures who live here. Mice, packrats, quail, dove, chipmunks, and kangaroo rats make a nourishing meal for a good hunter. By spring the windmill has been much shat upon, is a bit stiff, and is ready to be set free to sing in the western Colorado breeze. But for a few months each year it holds its peace and becomes a boon to winged hunters.
