Chipmunk Wildlife Painting, Colorado Landscape “Master of All He Surveys” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

I live in the desert of Western Colorado. A short drive away, the landscape changes from sage/juniper/pinyon desert to tall pines, cool air, and hundreds (literally) of lakes. Colorado’s Grand Mesa (debatably the world’s largest flat-top mountain) is the habitat for elk, deer, moose, bear, and chipmunks. Thousands of chipmunks. At the edge of the Mesa, where visitors gather for the breathtaking view, chipmunks gather, too. They are there for the treats they get from tourists. I photographed this handsome pair perched on the rugged volcanic rock at Land’s End.

Wildlife Painting, Pelicans, Snake River “Pelican Pair at Oxbow Bend” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Most American artists and photographers know that Oxbow Bend on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park is breathtakingly beautiful. It also provides a spectacular opportunity for wildlife viewing. This pair of pelicans was perfectly highlighted in a deeply shaded spot along the bank. My photograph of them was surprisingly good (I'm a lousy photographer--always clicking the shutter a fraction of a second too late) and working on this painting was really, really, fun.

Contemporary Wildlife Bird Art Painting “ Blue Moon” by ColoradoArtist Nancee Jean Busse

FRESH OFF THE EASEL....

SANDHILL CRANES MOONLIGHT PAINTING

There's something timeless and romantic about large birds in flight, sandhill cranes in particular. Western Colorado is one of the migratory flyways for greater sandhill cranes. It's always exciting for me to hear them overhead and wonder how much farther they will fly before stopping for the night for a well-needed rest before the next day's flight. I painted layer upon layer of blue glazes to achieve the deep, rich night sky. The birds are backlit by cool moonlight. I had a wonderful time, taking my time, with this painting.
